is 'serosorting' a reliable prevention method for HIV?
I believe that serosorting isn't connected to whether partners practice protected sex or not; serosorting is simply the act of choosing a partner based on their stated status. Someone who is positive or negative can serosort. We all know that there are many ways to connect on hook up sites and chatlines and even cruising spots. There are norms that have been created in some communities regarding how serosorting occurs and the degree in which a persons sorts, but the overarching concept remains the same. There are many websites where people claim to be HIV/AIDS or STD free so they can hook up easily with individuals. For some individuals, it may be a cover up about their true status or the individual might not know their actual status. Misinformation from a sexual partner without using protection puts both partners at risk, regardless of HIV status. I personally do not practice serosorting because I don't choose my partners based on their HIV status; considering this is a reliable, it can be a prevention method. However, I'm not sure I would consider it a reliable prevention method, but maybe a type of risk reduction method. Generally people serosort because they either want to maintain an HIV negative status, not infect an HIV negative person, or not become re-infected. Bottom line is, I believe you must always use protection when having sex, your LIFE matters.
